Global Food Partners (GFP), a Singapore-based consulting firm specialising in cage-free egg production, and Vencomatic, a company for design and production of poultry housing systems, have announced a partnership to establish a model farm in Indonesia to further cage-free egg production in the country and across Asia

In June 2021, GFP, The Faculty of Animal Science at the Universitas Gadjah Mada and Aeres University of Applied Sciences announced a partnership to develop a cage-free egg training centre at the University’s Bulaksumur Yogyakarta campus in East Java, Indonesia. The model farm is set to open at the end of 2021 and will form part of the training centre.

Vencomatic will sponsor the model farm’s cage-free housing system by providing equipment that is designed to meet the natural behaviours and instincts of layer hens. Sponsored equipment will include nests, flooring, perches, and the infrastructure necessary to house 3000 birds. Additionally, Vencomatic’s bird specialists will provide ongoing management support on housing and equipment maintenance. The centre will bring together egg producers and other industry stakeholders to improve the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the cage-free egg industry in Indonesia and across Asia.

According to GFP, the model farm will house 3,000-layer hens and provide practical training and serve as a local example of best practice housing and management for cage-free egg production as the region starts to transition to cage-free systems.

Jayasimha Nuggehalli, GFP’s chief operating officer and co-founder, said, “At Global Food Partners, we believe in providing support and local examples of best practices for cage-free farming across Asia. We’re proud to partner with Vencomatic, the world’s leading cage-free housing equipment manufacturer, to design and establish a cage-free model that works for egg farmers in Indonesia. Venconmatic’s equipment is designed around the needs of the birds which is crucial for good bird welfare. The centre is being developed to build a system that will bridge and build confidence, both on the producers’ side as well as the buyers’ side. We know Vencomatic’s extensive technical expertise and leading cage-free housing systems will help ensure improved efficiency, profitability and sustainability for egg farms in Indonesia and across Asia.”

Simon McKenzie, Vencomatic’s regional director of Asia and Oceania, said, “We’re thrilled to partner with Global Food Partners to support egg farmers in Indonesia and across Asia. Vencomatic’s philosophy matches Global Food Partners’, where we work to find innovative solutions to challenges, and our science and extension team engages with leading universities and conduct research and training to support local industries. We’re happy to contribute to the success of cage-free farmers in Southeast Asia.”
